The Soviet frigates of the Krivak I class, launched between 1970 and 1981, were somewhat based in the destroyers of the Kashin class. With these they
had in common the propulsion plant of gas turbines and some weapons. The powerful multipurpose armament included also new weapons: four antisubmarine
missiles SS-N-14 installed in the prow and two retractable launchers for the surface-to-air missile SA-N-4, one placed after the SS-N-14 launcher and the other
just after the stack. These ships had great speed and a heavy armament in comparison with western counterparts, but they were not prepared to
operate with helicopters. Actually the disposition was rather tight for the crew and the diverse elements.
The improved version Krivak II was produced between 1975 and 1982, and the heavily modified version Krivak III, built for the KGB Maritime Border Guard,
between 1984 and 1990. As 2016, it is uncertain how many of these ships remain in active service, but only a few in any case.
