The Soviet antisubmarine destroyers of the Udaloy class, launched between 1980 and 1990, were conceived as a complement of the Sovremennyy class destroyers.
Even larger than those, the ships of the Udaloy class were the first Soviet warships in their genre operating with two helicopters. This along with the
two quadruple SS-N-14 launchers, the two RBU-6000 antisubmarine mortars and the two quadruple torpedo tubes renders these ships as a prime threat for
any submarine. Other aspects of these ships created controversy when they were seen for the first time, in particular the fitting of AK-100 single mountings instead of
the newer AK-130 twin mountings and the apparently reduced radar equipment.
Even if the ships of the Udaloy class are close in size to those of the Sovremennyy class the two classes were built with different hulls, which would have
allowed to optimize the hull form for each type. Unlike the Sovremennyy, the Udaloy class was fitted with gas turbines, which should be beneficial for
the antisubmarine role thanks to the reduced underwater noise emissions. The classification of ships like these is controversial; whereas the Soviets referred
to them as "large antisubmarine ships", the NATO preferred the definition "guided missile destroyer", and their considerable size render them suitable for being
considered as cruisers.
