In 1862 an Italian steam corvette, built with an iron hull, entered service; she was armed with sixteen 160-millimeter cannons installed in batteries at each side of the hull, as in the sailing warships. The increase in size of naval cannons rendered necessary to reduce their number; because of that, between 1865 and 1885 they were designed ships with central batteries, in which the armament was concentrated in the armored area in the center of the hull, and ships with turrets diagonally disposed. The Andrea Doria was the last Italian battleship equipped with turrets arranged in diagonal (in the Italian ships the starboard turret was always placed further forward than the larboard one, unlike in the British counterparts). She belonged to the Roger di Lauria class, of which they were part as well the Francesco Morosino and the Ruggiero di Lauria. As the previous Duilio and Dandolo, these ships had an armored belt in the central area, but their hull was made of steel instead of iron, and their turrets of new model mounted breech-loading cannons instead of muzzle-loading ones. While the Andrea Doria was being completed, the design of capital ships was changing: the main armament was being reallocated to the fore and aft decks. The battleship Sardegna, built following such layout, entered service four years after the Andrea Doria.
