When she entered service in September 1954, the USS Nautilus was the largest submarine ever built and the first one propelled by nuclear energy. Her hull resembled that of the German Type XXI submarines developed during the Second World War, since the United States had carried out trials with "teardrop" hulls and regarded them as potentially faster and more maneuverable. The construction of the USS Nautilus was very costly for that time, ascending to 40 millions of dollars, of which 25 corresponded to the nuclear reactor. This one provided heat to move two steam turbines geared to the corresponding shafts, and electric motors fed by batteries were installed as an auxiliary propulsion system.
