Kilometer (American spelling) or Kilometre (international spelling) is a length unit of the metric system equal to 1000 meters. It is nowadays the measurement unit used officially for expressing geographical distances between land places in the largest part of the world, being notable exceptions the United States and the road network of the United Kingdom where the statute mile is the official unit used.

Mile (known as Statute Mile in United Kingdom) is an English length unit of linear measure not belonging to the metric system. Nowadays it is standardised as exactly 1609.344 meters since the international agreement of 1959. It remains in use in Anglo-Saxon countries for expressing geographical distances between land places.

Nautical Mile is a measurement unit defined as exactly 1852 meters (or 1.1508 statute miles). Historically, it was defined as one 60th of the distance between two parallels of latitude separated by one degree, but nowadays it is rounded to an even number of meters. It remains in use for both air and marine navigation as well as for the definition of territorial waters.
