Officers

In a diorama, the scenery on which the action occurs is of prime importance. The buildings are a key element for reenacting the proper ambiance. Then each detail tells its own history. Here we can see some officers (a lieutenant commander, a commissioned mechanic officer, a costal artillery lieutenant and a captain) discussing at the edge of the dock, whilst behind them a chauffeur waits next to a Mercedes civilian car.

Office building

The Port Command (HafenKommandantur) is next to the store, being these two facilities allocated on the same buiding. This one was constructed with wooden plates and covered with sand paper to create a texture on the walls. The buttresses were created with PVC strips textured with acetone and a metal-bristle brush. The windows were made of resin and the crystal panels were imitated with transparent plastic sheet. As windows are repetitive on every building they were reproduced through moulding. The tiles of the roof were imitated with small circles cut from carboard by using a hole puncher. They were firstly sticked and superimposed on a PVC board, and later covered with diluted wood glue to reinforce the assemble. The edges of the roof panels were covered with tinfoil, which was used as well for creating the rain gutters. The downspouts were made of plastic rods.

Office

The interiors were recreated through plastic plates and wooden sheets. The office room, where the auxiliary officer and her assistant work, has every essential accessory including the famous cipher machine Enigma. The personnel of the Port Command was in charge of having always ready all the needed materials and provisions for each visiting ship.
